Ochoco Count 2025 Report
The 36th Ochoco count was held on June 28th. Despite starting off with cloudy skies, the sun prevailed about mid-morning, and we got down to business. Thirteen participants in two groups (including a number of energetic teens) circled Big Summit Prairie and tallied up 40 species and 600 individual butterflies. Although the Dogbane was in full bloom, we were disappointed that not many butterflies were nectaring on the little pink blossoms like in past years. Also, no rare Silver-bordered Fritillaries were found at the creekside stop for the second year in a row – a worrisome observation.
