Eugene Count 2025 Report

We had 12 people counting at our 4 traditional sites. Vanessa Best led a group to the South hills, Jim Mitchell led a group to the Mt. Pisgah Arboretum, Lori Humphreys and Sue Anderson led a group to Buford Park East and LCC, and Rick Ahrens led a group to the West Eugene Wetlands. We also partnered with Nearby Nature this year to return to the Whilamut Natural Area (last counted in 2001), where Sharon and Jim Blick led a group of 5 Nearby Nature volunteers and 1 staff person. So our total was 20 counters, counting for a total of 18 party-hours.

Compared to last year, the Western Tiger Swallowtails are back up but the Common Ringlets are still way down – only 1 found! The Eastern Tailed Blues went way down from last year’s high while Mylitta Crescents are still up, but not as high as last year.

This year’s total for the California Sister (at our 4 traditional sites) was the highest ever counted for that species, while the Echo Azure Blue and the Common Checkered Skipper were the second highest ever counted for those species, and the Gray Hairstreak was the 3rd highest for that species.

At our 4 traditional sites we counted 305 individuals of 16 species. Our average over the last 10 years is 338 individuals of 19 species. Last year we found 23 species. Missing this year were the other two swallowtails, the other hairstreaks, all the ladies, all commas, all parnassians, all duskywings, Field Crescent, and Mourning Cloak. However, last year we did not see the Acmon Blue or the Echo Azure Blue.

For our total count this year we had 350 individuals of 18 species. By counting at Whilamut, we added Acmon Blue and Red Admiral.
